HMP Hewell, UK

We recently visited HMP Hewell and conducted a Champion Lift Ministry Olympic Weight Lifting event. We are pleased to be able to share with you below their own newsletter about the event.

...All those who lifted received a medal and winner gaining a small trophy...

Elim Kensington - Liverpool

We were thrillied to host Champion Lift Ministry with us over the weekend. The event attracted a good number of local people who haven't been to one of our services before. Everyone was really impressed with the passion and professionalism as Ryan and the team helped all age groups to lift the weights in Olympic fashion! There was a smile on everyone's faces as the medals and trophies were received. We would certainly invite Champion Lift Ministry again. well done for Jesus.

Swansea Valley

During a summer of tent missions in the Swansea Valley, we were privileged to work alongside "Champion Lift Ministry" to bring to people the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

...Ryan and his team of weightlifters proved to be a big attraction to the community...

The first time we worked with them was towards the end of June 2012, when we set up a 120 seater tent in the town of Clydach. Ryan and his team of weightlifters proved to be a big attraction to the community, with over 150 people turning up for the event (including a photographer for a local newspaper). Their way of presenting the Gospel in a fun, but also masculine way really helps to give a real opportunity for men (particularly) to come and hear of the love of Christ in a way that they can easily relate to, but also respect. We also worked with them on the day of the official launch of a new church in the village of Alltwen (once again, in the Swansea Valley - 2 miles from Clydach). They once again made the most of the opportunity to bring to onlookers (and participants!) a unique presentation of the Gospel.

We found the team to be immensely humble and Christlike. It was an honour to work with them, and we look forward to doing so again in the future!

What a great time we had with Champion Lift Ministry on Saturday afternoon. Everyone was engrossed with the instruction, the lifting, the message of God’s amazing love for us and the presentation of the medals and trophies.

There was so much fun and laughter as Ryan led us through the afternoon with his banter, engaging us all from the most to the least physically fit amongst us.

Local children and their dads had a great time lifting the weights – or trying to! but none of us were equal to Elliot’s amazing skill and strength as he demonstrated how it should be done. Everyone went home having truly enjoyed themselves & no one minded that the weather had been against us and that the pouring rain had driven us indoors. The lack of summer didn’t bother any of us for the afternoon!

Thank you John, Ryan & Elliot for being such a blessing to us all.

HMP YOI Thorn Cross

As a co-ordinating prison chaplain at Thorn Cross, I would highly recommend Champion Lift Ministry for any worship event or outreach in any category of prison within the United Kingdom. Ryan Morton and John Hays have exactly the right gifting to communicate the gospel through their testimony and through the hands on teaching method of weight lifting.

...Both staff and Trainees alike were challenged and deeply moved by Ryan and John's words...

We had one third of our prison in attendance in the Sports Hall for our first Champion Lift Worship event. Both staff and Trainees alike were challenged and deeply moved by Ryan and John's words. Any Governor, CARATs worker or any other committed prison service staff, would be encouraged by the anti drug and anti steroid abuse teaching that is an integral part of their presentation. Their message is highly motivational and offers a powerful & potentially life changing challenge to live a transformed life.

...If you have the chance to invite these gentlemen for an event then I would recommend you grab it with both hands...

We had John Hays and Ryan Morton at the Wolds prison recently. What a great day we had with a weightlifting demonstration and competition among the offenders. In the morning we had a good number watching and participating and all said they had enjoyed it. Ryan was also able to share some of his testimony as well as showing how to lift and giving advice on nutrition.

In the afternoon at the church service, John gave some of his testimony and Ryan spoke. Again this was a blessed time, and all those who attended really appreciated what was said. If you have the chance to invite these gentlemen for an event then I would recommend you grab it with both hands, (its hard to lift weights with one).

...the style of presentation was pitched just at the right level for the age range...

The (Champion Lift Ministry : ed) demonstration was excellent, the style of presentation was pitched just at the right level for the age range, they all loved it, and are still talking about it and asking when you are coming next!

The gospel message was clear and simple, with some making first time decisions to follow Christ.

I would highly recommend you to any youth group looking to put on an event, large or small.

Fifteen men most of them quite young took part in this Champion Lift experience. They entered into the task with enthusiasm and Ryan's friendly approach and easy manner was much appreciated by the lads and the officers and chaplain.

...Ryan's friendly approach and easy manner was much appreciated...

All the lads enjoyed the competition and prizes. The plentiful photos are going to be displayed here and they would like a further learning time with Ryan on the olympic style lifts. The Gospel was warmly offered and we pray that souls will be moved to Christ.

I hope we can develop this work involving sport and faith in a meaningful way.

Ryan Morton along with John Hays participated in a parish mission in October 2010 in the parish of Dalserf, South Lanarkshire where I am the minister.

...Being so good at something like weightlifting I believe immediately helps to counteract the distorted mamby-pamby image which many young folk have of the church...

When I was told that Ryan a champion weight lifter woud use weightlifting as an outreach tool I was both puzzled and intrigued to know how this would happen. Ryan did indeed use his weightlifting prowess well for the gospel. He did so with primary school children at an assembly and with particular effect with young men - former Boy's Brigade members - at a Boys's Brigade reunion evening. On both of these occasions Ryan also winsomely presented the gospel in ways appropriate to the situation in each case. Being so good at something like weightlifting I believe immediately helps to counteract the distorted mamby-pamby image which many young folk have of the church and the Christian faith and for many men will immediately remove a barrier to faith. The weightlifting of course is only an aid to preaching the gospel which Ryan does well. We saw that in particular when he preached at the Sunday morning service (no weightlifting on that occasion!). I feel God has called Ryan to be an evangelist. He and John Hays make a good team.

Rev Dr Cameron McPherson

Straight Ahead Ministries, USA

From time to time, Straight Ahead schedules special speakers to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with incarcerated youth. This week we welcome Ryan Morton, from England, who won the Bronze medal for Weightlifting at the 2011 British Masters Championship. Ryan is traveling throughout New England with speaking engagements in thirteen youth lock-up facilities over the course of six days. In addition to demonstrating proper lifting techniques and holding facility-wide Dead Lift competitions, he is also sharing how his faith in Jesus Christ transformed his life, and he offers the teenagers an opportunity to trust Christ for themselves.

...none of us can compete with the greatest weightlifter of all time, Jesus Christ...

I was with Ryan on Monday at a lock-up facility south of Boston. Twelve boys, aged 12-16, and three staff were present. After sharing a bit about how he got involved in competitive weight lifting and his personal achievements in the sport, he changed directions and began to talk about the greatest weightlifter who ever lived. "I can Dead Lift close to 600 pounds and some of my mates can do even more. But none of us can compete with the greatest weightlifter of all time, Jesus Christ. Jesus lifted the weight of the sins of the entire world and placed them on himself. He lifted the weight of the sins of everyone in this room so that by believing in Him you can have your sins forgiven and receive eternal life."

The Bible says "our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried…He Himself bore the sin of many, and interceded for the transgressors" (Isaiah 53:4, 12). I will be thankful throughout eternity to Jesus for lifting my sin onto His shoulders and bearing the weight of its penalty so that I might live.
